Finding Hope in Despair
Have you ever faced a moment when the future looked bleak? Have you felt that there was no way out, except to pray? That’s exactly where Hezekiah found himself. He was told to set his house in order because he was going to die. But instead of giving up, he turned to the wall... and turned to God.
2 Kings 20:1 states, "In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, 'Thus says the LORD: Set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live.'" Then he turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the LORD, saying, "Remember now, O LORD, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart and have done what was good in Your sight." Hezekiah wept bitterly.
These events are also recorded in 2 Chronicles and Isaiah. Hezekiah was on his deathbed, and Isaiah confirmed that he was going to die. With no hope of recovering from his illness, he turned to God in prayer, asking Him to remember the righteous deeds he had done. Hezekiah was not ready to die. The thought of dying made him weep bitterly.
God Hears Our Prayers
2 Kings 20:4 says, "And it happened, before Isaiah had gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying, 'Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD. I will add to your days fifteen years. I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for My own sake, and for the sake of My servant David.'"
Isn’t it amazing? God doesn’t just hear us; He sees us. He sees the tears running down our cheeks. He saw Hezekiah’s tears, and He sees yours too. You’re not invisible to God. You’re not unheard. Friends, that should be a comforting thought for every Christian. God is watching and listening to us closely. God answered Hezekiah’s prayer and sent Isaiah back to tell him that he would live for another 15 years.
The Importance of Intercessory Prayer
This story serves as a powerful reminder for us. We should never give up on praying for those who are sick or even for those whom the doctor says have no chance of living. Because if it is God’s will to answer our prayers, He can keep that person alive longer. Nothing is too hard for God.
2 Kings 20:7 continues, "Then Isaiah said, 'Take a lump of figs.' So they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered." Hezekiah then asked Isaiah, "What is the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up to the house of the LORD the third day?"
Isaiah responded, "This is the sign to you from the LORD: Shall the shadow go forward ten degrees or go backward ten degrees?" Hezekiah found it easy for the shadow to go down ten degrees. However, he asked for the shadow to go backward ten degrees.
God’s Miraculous Signs
Isaiah cried out to the LORD, and God brought the shadow backward ten degrees, proving that He had indeed spoken through Isaiah. This miraculous sign was a testament to God’s power and presence in Hezekiah’s life. It reminds us that what may seem difficult or impossible to us is not hard for God to do at all.
So, what about us? When we face sickness, hardship, or despair, we can do exactly what Hezekiah did: turn to God. We serve a God who hears our prayers, sees our tears, and answers in His perfect way. The phrase "Nothing is beyond His reach" resonates deeply in these moments of our lives.
Whether He grants healing now or promises healing in eternity, we can trust Him completely. Our faith in God should not falter, even in difficult times.
Trusting in God’s Plan
Never doubt what God can do. What seems impossible to us is simple for Him. He turned the shadow back for Hezekiah. He can turn things around in your life, too. Trust in His timing and plan. God knows what we need, and He will not abandon us when we seek Him with our whole hearts.
In conclusion, let us take Hezekiah’s story as an inspiration. When faced with our own trials, may we remember to turn to God in prayer, just as Hezekiah did. God hears us, sees our struggles, and is always ready to intervene. Trust in His love and power today.
